About
Hello, my name is Karen S. Garvin. My interests include writing, photography, science, and computers. I’ve recently taken up running, so I’m adding that to the list. I ran my first 5K race in late August, 2007.
I’ve worked in publishing industry since 1981, back when computers were huge mainframe boxes and and the internet didn’t even exist (personal computers were just over the horizon). Within that industry, I’ve filled various positions: coder, typesetter, graphic artist, production manager, managing editor, copy editor, desktop publisher, editor, freelancer, and writer.
I also worked in the printing industry, where I did all kinds of prepress work. Basically, that includes all of the above, plus anything else needed before a job goes on the printing press. However, it’s a very stressful way to make a living — it’s even more stress than writing and editing deadlines! Even so, I have to admit that I learned a lot about the software I work with as well as printing know-how.
With so much on-the-job experience, I decided to formalize my education with a bachelor’s degree, so I am working on a degree in Communications from The University of Maryland University College. Many of the classes are online, which makes it very convenient to take classes. Some of my classmates are halfway around the world, which make for interesting discussions in the class forums.
I am interested in pursuing a full-time position where I can write about science and health topics for a general audience, but for now, Focal Plane is my creative outlet. I also expect to start freelance writing when I have time away from my classes.
Thanks for stopping by Focal Plane!
