About

Hello, my name is Karen S. Garvin. My interests include writing, photography, history, science, and running.

I’ve worked in the printing and publishing industry since 1981, back when computers were huge mainframe boxes and and the internet didn’t even exist (personal computers were just over the horizon). Within that industry, I’ve filled various positions: coder, typesetter, graphic artist, production manager, managing editor, copy editor, desktop publisher, editor, pre-press technician, and writer.

With so much on-the-job experience, I decided to formalize my education with a bachelor’s degree and went back to school to complete a degree in Communications from The University of Maryland University College. In the spring of 2010, I will begin graduate school at American Military University, where I will pursue a Master’s degree in history.

Focal Plane is my creative outlet, and I hope you will enjoy the articles here. Thanks for stopping by!
